Not Pressure, Just Pathway.

This week on the mat, we move into the space of choice. We are not defined by what happens to us. We are defined by how we choose to show up. When we gently redirect our energy, we invite depth, we welcome nourishment. And what we nourish naturally grows.

Autumn leaves spring blossoms and winter ice lake
In the Chinese Medicine Five Element theory, different elements offer different doorways into decision-making:

  • The Wood Element is our lens for direction and emergence.

    • Wood asks: What path am I walking? What new shoot am I nurturing?

  • Here in Edinburgh, we’re deep in autumnal mode. The city is all shades of red-orange, a bit like rusty iron. It is the season to honour the Metal Element which brings clarity, refinement, release. This is also the element of attunement—of listening deeply to where your energy and efforts are truly welcome. Because when we keep pouring ourselves into something (or someone) that’s hollow, untrue, or unable to receive us, that energy is lost. And nothing real can grow.

    • Metal asks: What must I let go of to choose again, more clearly?
    • The energy of attunement popped into my head (or heart) after seeing a post on discernment by my lovely and wise friend Marina. Connect with her on IG for inspiration and anchoring here @TalkWithMarina ♡
  • The Water Element reminds us of the depth beneath every decision.

    • Water asks: Am I choosing from fear or from flow?

Each element—Wood, Metal, and Water—offers its own kind of wisdom. Notice when one leads, and when another goes quiet. This is subtle work, but powerful. A practice in returning to your rhythm.

Ritual & Reflection

  • Before practice: Hold a small object—a leaf, a pebble, a coin—and ask: “What am I choosing today?” Then ask: “What am I releasing to choose this more fully?”
  • After practice: Sit for a few quiet moments. Journal what softened. What surprised you. What felt once-rigid. Let your insights land.

Where to Find Me

You are always welcome. For movement, for stillness, for a walk or a word. Roll out your mat and remember: you are not defined by what happens to you. You are defined by how you choose to show up, where you place your energy, and what you nourish in yourself.

Thank you for taking the time to read and reflect with me. Hope to see you on the mat!

much love,
